Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a common condition usually caused by a bacterial infection. Fortunately, most gum disease can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene and getting regular dental cleanings. In its early stages, gum disease can be reversed. In its advanced stages, it can be treated and prevented from progressing.

While periodontitis can’t be cured once it is present, treatments exist to improve the condition and prevent it from progressing.
